Rapist, attempted murder suspect out on bail for various other crimes

"Fear comes at night". So says the father of the Tuks student who was attacked in October in a security complex in Magalieskruin, Pretoria. She was overpowered and raped, and hacked 23 times with a machete.

It is not well with his daughter.

"Her wounds healed well and thanks to excellent plastic surgery by dr. Stefan Rawlins, her wounds are much smaller than we expected, "he said.

Her left thumb was almost cut off in the incident, but the doctors saved her finger in an emergency rescue operation.

The doctors could remove the piece which went into her skull had penetrated her brain.

Her father, a magistrate and prosecuter with more than 30 years of legal experience, said although the wounds healed well, the emotional trauma which his daughter suffered is "enormous".

"After she left the hospital, she stayed for a while with family and friends because she could not go to the place where she was attacked. Her mother, who lived in Botswana, resigned her job to come and stay with her.

"She struggles due to the trauma, because once it gets dark, she gets anxiety attacks.

"It’s not going well with one of us in the family," her father said emotionally.

She and her mother now live together in the same townhouse where she was raped and left for dead.
She is currently receiving psychiatric treatment and is on antidepressants.

"I want to thank Dr. Peter Coertze (an orthopedic surgeon), who struggled for four and a half hours to save my daughter’s life and also all the medical staff at the Montana Hospital who looked so well after my child.

"The prayers and e-mails from Australia, New Zealand, England and South Africa are already knee height in my office and I do not have word to thank all these wonderful people," he said.

After Mr. Tsietsi Samuel Msiza (24) was arrested on the night of her rape, he escaped two days later under police guard from Drs. George Mukhari hospital.

Then student konst. Mphikeledi Mahlanga Alfred (39) and ao. Chris Amos Masilela (48) was arrested in connection with his escape and appeared in the Pretoria North Regional court on charges of assistance to escape. The case against them were withdrawn.

Msiza was arrested again in the Moot when he broke into a house a week later.

Her father considers civil claims against the minister of justice and police because Msiza had been three times previously accused of rape in January last year, after six years in prison, was released on bail of R1 000.

This is because the investigating officer at the court did not arrive to oppose bail.

Msiza has pleaded not guilty to these charges. Msiza will soon re-appear in court.
